Mr. Rajveer Singh Sodha (Special Assistant to CM Sindh on Human Rights) and Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho (Chairperson, Sindh Human Rights Commission) visited the judicial lockup in District Umerkot to assess detention conditions.
Key Findings:
• District administration No was asked to have alternative to electricity, ventilation, or ceiling fans during peak summer heat.
• Lack of lighting and basic hygiene and recommended for white wash.
• 44 detainees, most of whom are booked into narcotics offences with no legal aid.
Mr. Detho emphasized: “Even under-trial prisoners are entitled to dignity and protection under the Constitution and international human rights conventions.”
Immediate Directives Issued:
• Solar panel installation for uninterrupted power
• Improved sanitation and hygiene measures
• Engagement of District Legal Aid Committee for legal support
• Health Dept to screen inmates and provide psychosocial services
