SHRC Conducts Official Visit to Women’s Jail Hyderabad to Assess Human Rights Conditions
Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), along with Member Judicial-I, Mr. Mir Safdar Hussain Talpur, conducted an official visit to the Women’s Jail Hyderabad. The visit was accompanied by Assistant Commissioner City Hyderabad Mr. Babar Saleh Rahpoto, and representatives from the Legal Aid Society (LAS) and SPARC.
The SHRC delegation held a detailed meeting with Jail Superintendent Ms. Abida Sami to evaluate the human rights conditions, legal aid mechanisms and overall welfare of the female inmates their children.
Chairperson Detho underscored the constitutional right of prisoners to access legal aid and called for the immediate activation of an Oversight Committee, which has been pending notification. He further recommended the solarization of the jail to improve energy sustainability and advocated for vocational training programs for female inmates in collaboration with STEVTA to support skill development and rehabilitation.
Addressing the issue of overpopulation and separation from families, the Chairperson emphasized that prisoners belonging to other districts should be transferred to their respective district jails where space permits.
He also encouraged the Assistant Commissioner to explore partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce for the welfare and reintegration of prisoners through community and corporate support.
