On March 21, 2025, the Sindh Persons with Disabilities Protection Authority (SPDPA) and Pakistan Down Syndrome Association - PDSA organized an event to mark World Down Syndrome Day. Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), was the keynote speaker at the event.
In his address, Mr. Detho emphasized the need for comprehensive rehabilitation programs for persons with Down syndrome, beyond charitable approaches. He appreciated the Sindh Government’s Rs. 2 billion grant for persons with disabilities, highlighting the significance of programmatic interventions for their welfare.
He also emphasised the article 1 to 4 and 5 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
He also stressed that private buildings must ensure accessible infrastructure and that the government should enforce regulations to guarantee inclusivity. He further emphasized that persons with Down syndrome must have equal participation in public life and urged for greater awareness to combat social stigma.
