On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Sindh Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the Marvi Rural Development Organization, hosted a special event at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, to highlight women’s rights and empowerment.
Iqbal Ahmed Detho, the Chairperson of SHRC, addressed the gathering by emphasizing that despite progress, societal structures still fall short in fully recognizing and protecting women’s rights. Detho pointed out that while Sindh has made strides in improving the legal framework for women's rights, much more needs to be done at the grassroots level. He stressed the need to tackle entrenched cultural and social norms that often undermine the full participation and freedom of women, especially in rural areas.
MPA Barrister Halaar Wasaan also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of legal reforms in protecting women’s rights. She advocated for the inclusion of more women in decision-making processes and the need for stronger legal protections to ensure their safety and equality. Her remarks resonated with the audience, highlighting how law and justice play a crucial role in empowering women.
Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University, Dr. Yousuf Khushk, also addressed the gathering, shedding light on the vital role women play in the advancement of society and the importance of education in empowering them. He spoke passionately about how the progress of women directly impacts the progress of the entire nation. He emphasized that women's empowerment is essential for a prosperous future, not only in Sindh but throughout Pakistan. His message of support for women's education and inclusion was a key takeaway from the event.
By highlighting these issues, Detho and the SHRC urged the government and civil society to continue working together to create an environment where women's rights are respected and where women can truly thrive.
