Chairperson Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, conducted an oversight visit to Central Jail Karachi, accompanied by DIG Prisons & Correctional Facilities, Mr. Muhammad Hassan Sahto. The visit aimed to assess prison conditions, safeguard inmates' rights, and recommend actionable improvements.
Key concerns and recommendations highlighted during the visit:
Legal Aid for Prisoners – Several inmates in urgent need of legal assistance were identified. Chairperson Detho emphasized the importance of activating the District Legal Empowerment Committee to provide legal support to those not covered under the Committee of Welfare of Prisoners (CWP).
Cases of Wrongful Imprisonment – Instances of inmates wrongfully imprisoned under the blasphemy law were brought to attention, stressing the need for fair legal representation and review of unjust detentions.
Addressing Overcrowding – With overpopulation a major concern, recommendations were made for temporary measures to reduce inmate numbers and prevent disease outbreaks.
