SHRC and FES Organize Citizen Dialogue in Sanghar to Promote Labor Rights and BHR Compliance

The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), organized a Citizen Dialogue in Sanghar on July 24, 2025, to raise awareness about labor rights and the need for Business and Human Rights (BHR) compliance.

Mr. Iqbal Detho, Chairperson SHRC, highlighted the Commission’s role in integrating BHR principles into its mandate and urged stronger district-level legal frameworks to protect vulnerable workers.

Ms. Sara Javed, Deputy Commissioner Sanghar, welcomed SHRC and reiterated the district administration’s support for rights-based development initiatives.

Mir Safdar Hussain Talpur (Member Judicial – SHRC) underscored SHRC’s mandate to safeguard labour rights, stressing legal gaps and highlighting the Commission’s new report on child protection in the brick kiln industry.

Mr. Abdullah Dayo, Program Advisor at FES-Pakistan, called for responsible supply chains and emphasized the importance of minimum wages, EOBI registration, and third-party oversight in ensuring workplace dignity.

Mr. Abid Hussain, SSP Sanghar, acknowledged SHRC’s work in tackling key human rights concerns such as forced conversions and early child marriages.

Mr. Rajesh Kumar Hardasani, SHRC Committee Member, pointed out that minority labourers face heightened discrimination and threats based on their religious identity, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted protections and policy attention.

Ms. Kausar Nisa, Sindh Home-Based Workers Federation, raised the issue of gender-based violence and social protections for women in informal labor.

Labor union reps from Sinjhoro highlighted stagnant wages, lack of bonuses, and no health insurance. Civil society and media professionals pointed to poor enforcement of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) under the Companies Act, 2017.

The dialogue ended with a unified call for better labor protections, stronger enforcement of CSR laws, and inclusive policies aligned with national and international standards.
