SHRC Chairperson Leads Inspection Visit to District Jail Sanghar to Review Inmate Rights and Prison Conditions

The Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Mr. Iqbal Detho and team conducted an inspection visit to the District Jail in Sanghar to assess the conditions and rights of inmates. SHRC team was accompanied by the SHRC’s judicial member and a member of the Commission’s sub-committee to ensure a thorough technical and legal review of the prison’s facilities and services.

During the visit, the Chairperson raised concerns regarding the dilapidated and hazardous condition of the roofs in two of the barracks, which can pose significant safety risks to the inmates at any time. Additionally, he noted gaps in the provision of legal aid services and emphasized the urgent need to strengthen access to justice for all detainees.

The Chairperson directed the duty medical officer to ensure regular monthly health screenings for all inmates and to promptly refer those requiring specialized or tertiary care to appropriate healthcare facilities. He also instructed jail authorities to facilitate inmates with required assistive devices and take efforts to arrange mobile service for referral of inmates for court hearings or online video hearings to ensure timely legal proceedings for those unable to attend in person.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Detho appreciated the efforts made by the jail administration to maintain a green and clean environment within the jail premises, recognizing it as a positive step towards the rehabilitation and mental well-being of inmates.

The visit concluded with a commitment from SHRC to continue monitoring the human rights situation in custodial settings and advocate for necessary reforms in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
