Born on Labour Day, Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of SHRC, remains a steadfast advocate for labour rights. Under his leadership, SHRC has prioritized minimum wage advocacy, legal aid, labour courts, occupational rights, and the enforcement of contract letters and maternity benefits. Despite labour rights being absent from the human rights budget, SHRC continues to push for reforms, legal reviews, and greater collaboration. He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the Sindh Labour Academy and urged legislative action for real change.
Rajvir Singh Sodha: Government’s Commitment to Labour Rights
Rajvir Singh Sodha, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Human Rights, acknowledged the challenges in labour rights and announced a dedicated budget for human rights, including labour protections. Zulfiqar Ali Shah: Labour Rights Are Human Rights
Zulfiqar Ali Shah, SHRC Member, highlighted Pakistan’s labour crisis. He pointed out that 95 percent of workers lack union representation, 23 percent are trapped in forced labour, and 12.5 million children are engaged in work instead of education. Women continue to face low wages and exclusion, while unsafe workplaces put many lives at risk. He called for stronger policies, awareness, and education to protect workers, stressing that labour academies play a key role in driving change.
