Public Hearing on Human & Labour Rights in Tharparkar: A Step Towards Sustainable Development!
On September 20, 2024, the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Pakistan, organized a public hearing on human and labour rights due diligence and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions in Tharparkar. The session was led by Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson SHRC, along with Mr. Abdullah Dayo, Program Officer, FES Pakistan, Ms. Tahseen Fatima, Secretary, Human Rights Department, Government of Sindh, Mr. Abdul Haleem Jagerani, Deputy Commissioner, Tharparkar and Mr. Shabir Sethar, Senior Superintendent of Sindh Police Tharparkar. The event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from Labour Department, Police, Local Government, Health, Education, Civil Society organizations, CSRs, Labour unions.
Iqbal Ahmed Detho reaffirmed the commission's commitment to upholding human rights principles, citing the United Nations Guiding Principles and the GSP+ Scheme. Key laws protecting workers' rights in Sindh were also highlighted. Inadequate healthcare, education, infrastructure, and communication were voiced during Q&A.
Mr. Detho pledged to advocate for these issues. SHRC and FES-Pakistan vowed to join forces to tackle Tharparkar's concerns, promoting a business environment that prioritizes human rights, equitability, sustainability, and social responsibility.
