Advancing Women's Rights in Agriculture: Insights from the 2nd PSA Meeting by SHRC

The Sindh Human Rights Commission recently hosted the 2nd Meeting of the Provincial Stakeholders Alliance (PSA) for the Empowerment of Women Agricultural Workers in Sindh, in collaboration with the NARI Foundation and AWAZ. This significant event marked a crucial step forward in advocating for women's rights and empowerment in the agricultural sector of Sindh.

The meeting focused on advancing the implementation of "The Sindh Women Agricultural Workers Act 2019," aiming to address the challenges faced by women in agricultural labor and strengthen collective efforts for their empowerment. Key discussions revolved around legislative provisions, constitutional rights, and the need for effective implementation of labor laws to ensure equitable opportunities and protections for women workers.

Mr. Reejhu Mal, a Law Officer at the Labour Department, Government of Sindh, highlighted the legal framework and recent amendments that prioritize women's rights in labor laws. He emphasized Sindh's dedication to empowering women through legislation such as the Women Agricultural Workers Act and ongoing efforts to draft the Sindh Domestic Workers Law.

Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission, reiterated Sindh's commitment to labor rights and social justice following the 18th amendment. He emphasized the province's autonomy in enacting tailored legislation and proactive measures for worker empowerment.

Barrister Rida Tahir, Legal Consultant at SHRC, moderated the meeting, emphasizing the importance of safe workplaces and effective implementation of labor laws, including the Harassment at Workplace Act. She reiterated SHRC's mission to safeguard human rights, particularly for women.

Ms. Farhat Perveen, Executive Director of NOW Communities, highlighted the gap between policy and practice in labor rights implementation, stressing the need for capacity-building efforts within the Labor Department.

Mr. Shafqat Larik, Deputy Secretary of the Law Department, Government of Sindh, emphasized the Act's provisions to support and protect rural women farmers, urging active implementation for meaningful change and inclusive growth.
