Addressing the gathering at the Project Launch Event, “Supporting Civil Society to Prevent and Respond to Child, Early and Forced Marriage” the Chairperson, of Sindh Human Rights Commission Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho delved into the significance of legislative reforms like the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Act, 2016 in Punjab, and the applicability of the Child Marriage Restraint Act 2019 in KP, Baluchistan, and Islamabad.
Additionally, he elaborated on the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013, emphasizing the importance of informed action in addressing the pressing issue of child marriage.
An instrumental effort by SHRC was revealed during the event - the creation of a manual on child early and forced marriage, demonstrating their commitment to combatting this issue.
Mr. Detho emphasized SHRC's dedication to focusing on Union councils, underscoring the need for grassroots engagement.
Additionally, Mr. Detho brought attention to the legal framework, mentioning section 498-B of the Pakistan Penal Code, and highlighted the absence of a birth registration act in Sindh, stressing the urgency for comprehensive measures to safeguard children's rights. This enlightening event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Save the Children International and Strengthening Participatory Organization.
