Celebrating International Human Rights Day at the Sindh Boys Scout Association in Karachi, the Sindh Human Rights Commission, in collaboration with the Human Rights Department of the Government of Sindh, organized an event attended by diverse participants, including school children, government officials, civil society members, and stakeholders.
The event focused on the theme of Education and Awareness, emphasizing the empowerment of individuals with knowledge about their rights.
Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission, commenced the event by condemning the Israeli genocide of Gaza. He emphasized the Commission's commitment to global human rights issues and provided insights into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Pakistan's adherence to international covenants.
Mr. Detho highlighted the SHRC's background, mandate, powers, and functions, showcasing various activities, engagements, and training organized by the Commission. He stressed the importance of compliance with international standards, leaving a significant impact with his address.
Mr. Qindeel Shujaat introduced Sohris.com, an online platform aimed at providing comprehensive information on Human Rights, especially focused on Sindh. The platform contains valuable resources, including information, laws, research reports, and publications related to human rights in Pakistan and globally.
Barrister Rida Tahir presented a study on the Mapping of Legal Aid Mechanism in Sindh, emphasizing the fundamental right to legal aid, particularly for marginalized groups like women and children. She highlighted SHRC's efforts in providing free legal aid in specific cases.
Ms. Shireen Narejo, Secretary of Education & Literacy Department, Government of Sindh, discussed the intrinsic link between education, responsibilities, and the critical issue of climate change. She stressed the need for a broader societal approach to address climate change issues through education.
Jameel Junejo, Executive Head at Treaty Implementation Cell (TIC), Human Rights Department, GoS, shared insights into the Treaty Implementation Cell and unveiled the updated Human Rights Policy. His presentation highlighted the importance of adapting policies to meet evolving societal needs in the realm of human rights.
