Consultative Meeting with Stakeholders Prioritizing Trafficking in Persons & Bonded Labour in the Election Manifestos of Political Parties

SSDO Pakistan in collaboration with the Sindh Human Rights Commission and the US Embassy in Islamabad, convened a Stakeholder’s Working Group Meeting. Representatives from major political parties like PPP, MQM, PTI, and other political parties actively participated, emphasizing the integration of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) issues into political manifestos. Discussions highlighted challenges regarding TIP and Bonded Labour, underscoring the necessity for robust policy integration within party manifestos to address these issues effectively.

During the meeting, Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of SHRC, highlighted hurdles in implementing the Sindh Bonded Labour System and (Abolition) Act of 2015 due to the absence of labor officers in certain districts. He stressed the crucial roles of legislative, executive, and judicial bodies in addressing these concerns. He also highlighted the need for vigilant legislative oversight and expressed concern over the inactivity of standing committees in the previous tenure.

SSDO's Executive Director, Syed Kausar Abbas, emphasized the need for collective action across societal sectors to combat Trafficking in Persons and Bonded Labour.

Mr. Ayoub Khoso Board Member (SHRC) noted PPP's commitment to prioritizing human rights and addressing these issues as part of the government's agenda.

Former MPA-PPP, Ms. Shamim Mumtaz, emphasized the importance of establishing rules for effective implementation, echoing the sentiment that every government has a responsibility.

Former MPA-PTI Mohammad Ali Aziz, highlighted the political parties' disinterest in addressing the bonded labor concern, attributing it to the occurrence of such cases.

In conclusion, stakeholders urged political parties to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to addressing Trafficking in Persons and Bonded Labour in their agendas.
