The Future of District Peace Committees in Sindh – Provincial Dialogue.

The Sindh Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Legal Aid Society and the Auqaf, Religious Affairs, Zakat & Ushr Department, organized a collaborative consultation titled "The Future of District Peace Committees in Sindh – Provincial Dialogue.

This event highlighted key findings from the Legal Aid Society's research and delved into the creation of a working paper that offers concrete recommendations to further institutionalize and enhance District Peace Committees in Sindh.

Chairperson of SHRC, Iqbal Ahmed Detho, extended a warm welcome to all our guests. He underscored the crucial need for legislative support, emphasizing that District Peace Committees in Sindh currently lack a legal foundation. Mr. Detho urged for amendments to anchor these committees in laws, enabling institutionalization, collaboration with relevant authorities, and the provision of capacity-building trainings and public awareness initiatives.

We were honored to have Mr. Muhammad Omer Soomro, Minister for Law, Religious Affairs, and Human Rights Department, share his insights during the recent Consultation.

He emphasized the primary objective of our gathering—to work together in finding practical solutions to address the gaps and challenges in the operationalization of District Peace Committees.

Mr. Sukhdev Assardas Hemnani, Member of (SHRC), shared a compelling message. He highlighted the significance of District Peace Committees in proactively preventing religious violence and fulfilling the cherished vision of our founding fathers—a society built on peace and interfaith harmony.

Justice (R) Arif Hussain Khilji, the Chief Legal Advisor of the Legal Aid Society, imparted his profound insights and steadfast dedication to the justice system. His invaluable suggestions for reinforcing District Peace Committees underscore the importance of formalizing terms of reference through re-notifications, improving representation and inclusivity, and enhancing the operational capabilities of Dispute Resolution Bodies.

Mr. Munawar Ali Mahesar, Secretary for Auqaf, Religious Affairs, Zakat & Ushr Department, shared his insights during our recent consultation. He emphasized the crucial need to increase coordination between the department and peace committee members. Building strong partnerships is key to fostering peace and harmony in our communities.
