International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
Sindh Human Rights Commission and our partner SACH-Struggle For Change held a consultation to honor the UN Convention Against Torture. This event delved into existing policies, challenges, and legislative mechanisms to uphold citizens' rights within the context of this convention.
Chairperson's Welcome: Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of SHRC, emphasized the recently passed Torture and Custodial Death Act, 2022, which prohibits torture for extracting evidence. Despite constitutional provisions, challenges persist in addressing widespread torture and inadequate implementation of anti-torture laws. The Chairperson shared the urgent need to raise awareness, advocate against torture, and call upon the government to take decisive action against this violation of human rights.
Ms. Nida Dayo, Office Coordinator of SACH-Struggle for Change, highlighted their organization's comprehensive services, including psychological support, legal aid, rehabilitation, and capacity building for survivors of traumatic human rights abuses.
Despite the Torture Act in place, Mr. Ghaffar Thaeem from WDD noted the continued existence of various forms of torture within our society.
Ms. Rukhsana Mangi, Incharge of the Women Protection Cell in Sukkur, shared the registration of 52 FIRs against torture, demonstrating the commitment to hold perpetrators accountable.
The meeting brought together the presence of SHRC Judicial and Board members including Justice (R) Mr. Arshad Noor (Judicial Member I), Mr. Sukhdev Assardas Hemnani, and Mr. Zulifqar Shah.
