The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) recently organized a strategic planning workshop to define its objectives and set priorities for the period of 2022-2025. We are pleased to share with you some highlights from this productive event:
The workshop commenced with an enlightening briefing by Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, the Chairperson of Sindh Human Rights Commission. Mr. Detho shed light on the powers and functions of the commission, emphasizing the recent amendments made to SHRC's rules of business. He highlighted that the commissions align with the Paris Principles and are national human rights organizations.
A comprehensive technical session was conducted by Mr. Qindeel Shujaat, who reviewed the Sindh Human Rights Commission Strategic Plan. He assessed different stages and incorporated essential elements into the plan. Mr. Shujaat focused on the expectations, challenges, and developments in Sindh, while emphasizing the key features and priorities of the strategic plan. Participants engaged in parallel discussions to identify areas for improvement and opportunities within the SHRC Strategic Plan 2022-25.
In another session, Mr. Atta Mustafa, a seasoned consultant, provided a thorough analysis of "Monitoring of Human Rights' Violations & Complaints Handling Mechanisms by NHRIs in Pakistan." He evaluated SHRC's complaints handling mechanism and compliance, while presenting extensive research on "How can Autonomous Independent Institutions Co-Exist in Pakistan? Challenges and Way Forward."
Scholar and renowned expert Mr. Naseer Memon delivered a session titled "An overview on the Human Rights Situation in Sindh Province with a special focus on flood-affected areas." He shed light on the plight of people in flood-affected regions, providing valuable insights.
Mr. Jamil Junejo, from the Treaty Implementation Cell of the Human Rights Department, Government of Sindh, discussed International Human Rights Obligations and the Role of Provincial Treaty Implementation Cell. He also elaborated on the Human Rights department's involvement in implementing International Treaties.
Barrister Rida Tahir, a consultant from SHRC, presented technical input on the drafts of the Sindh Human Rights Policy and Sindh Child Protection Policy.
Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, the Chairperson and host of the event, reviewed "The Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2011," and emphasized the strengthening of the Sindh Human Rights Commission. He shared the effectiveness and impact of SHRC in promoting and protecting human rights in Sindh. The Chairperson reiterated the Commission's unwavering commitment to fulfilling its mandate and expressed eagerness for future engagements and collaborations in the pursuit of a just and rights-based society.
Ms. Nuzhat Shirin, Chairperson of the Sindh Commission for the Status of Women, applauded the collaborative efforts between SHRC and other departments. She commended the newly appointed leadership of SHRC for establishing a platform for collaboration with various commissions established by the Government of Sindh.
Mr. Surendar Valasai, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Human Rights, expressed gratitude to the participants from various stakeholders, including media, lawyers, civil society, and government departments. He acknowledged the pivotal role of the Sindh Human Rights Commission in promoting human rights.
