Awareness Raising Workshop & Legal Aid Camp on Women's Marriages Rights

On May 29th, 2024, a significant event unfolded at The Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University Sukkur, organized by Sindh Human Rights Commission and Musawi in partnership with Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University. This event aimed to raise awareness about women's marriage rights and provide legal aid. Tehmina Mangan, the Vice-Chancellor of BNBWU, extended a warm welcome to all speakers and participants, including esteemed figures such as Peer Muhammad Shah, DIG Sukkur, Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of SHRC, and Barrister Khadija, Director of Musawi. The event was moderated by Barrister Rida.

Tehmina Mangan delivered an inaugural speech, emphasizing the importance of understanding women's marriage rights and basic human rights. She discussed key aspects of the global women's index and underscored the cultural differences between Europe and South Asia. Mangan articulated her vision to empower women across various spheres of life, particularly addressing students and female participants from the SRSO community.

Peer Muhammad Shah shed light on the challenges women face within police stations and recognized women's historical contributions to humanity's survival. He appreciated the presence of women in the hall and advocated for safeguarding women's right to inheritance, addressing archaic traditions like marrying women to the Holy Quran, and implementing relevant laws to prevent such occurrences.

Iqbal Ahmed Detho focused on key issues related to women's marriage rights and announced plans to establish the Nusrat Bhutto Sindh Human Rights Centre at BNBWU. He commended the efforts of Prof. Dr. Tehmina Mangan and highlighted gender discrimination issues prevalent in society.

The event culminated with Tehmina Mangan distributing shields and Ajrak among the speakers, acknowledging their contributions. In the workshop's second session, Barrister Rida presented strategies for ensuring gender equality in education and employment to economically empower women. Barrister Khadija followed with a presentation on combating gender-based violence (GBV) and discrimination, with a special focus on Muslim laws concerning women's marriage rights.

Through these discussions and presentations, the event served as a platform for raising awareness, fostering dialogue, and advocating for the protection and advancement of women's rights in society.
